Abigail Powers Fillmore—Born March 13, 1798 (Saratoga County, NY). Died March 30, 1853 (Washington, D.C.).
White House Years: 1850-1853
First Lady Abigail Fillmore was raised by a single mother on the western frontier, where she and her brother were given an excellent home education.
Abigail Fillmore’s love for learning stayed with her, and she worked as a teacher even after marrying Millard Fillmore in 1826.
Staying true to her love for reading, Abigail Fillmore received a special $2000 appropriation from Congress to create a White House library in the oval room on the second floor.
