CSCA SOGI Caucus Book Club

Dear SOGI Caucus Members,

I am excited to invite you to this year’s CSCA SOGI Caucus Book Club discussion, where we will be diving into Judith Butler’s latest book, Who’s Afraid of Gender? This thought-provoking session will take place at CSCA in Cincinnati on Thursday, April 3, from 2:00 PM to 3:15 PM EDT in Salon E.

In Who’s Afraid of Gender?, Butler unpacks the rising global panic surrounding gender and how reactionary politics have weaponized it to undermine reproductive justice, queer and trans rights, and social progress. Through this session, we’ll engage with Butler’s arguments, reflect on their implications for communication studies, and discuss how gender continues to shape both our academic and personal landscapes.

How to Participate:
To join the discussion, we ask that you read Who’s Afraid of Gender? in advance of the convention. The book is available for purchase in hardcover or paperback from most booksellers, or you might be able to borrow it from your library.

Whether you are deeply familiar with Butler’s work or engaging with their scholarship for the first time, we welcome you to be part of this conversation. This is an opportunity for us to come together as a caucus, critically reflect on these pressing issues, and think collectively about where we go from here.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. We look forward to seeing you at the book club and having a lively, engaging discussion!

Warmly,

Jimmie Manning
